As I tell all my career-seeking clients, every career campaign should incorporate using various aspects and tools accessible to help you obtain your next employment situation. While many career seekers would prefer not to work with recruiters as a tool, I strongly believe that it is definitely a resource to consider as you tackle finding a job.
To help you best choose the right recruiter for your career search and obtain the most suitable job or assignment, PTI Career Services has devised five simple strategies that can help you and the job placement specialist best meet your employment search goals:
1) Research many recruiting firms in your industry. There are literally millions for firms that you can work with, at local, regional and international levels. Review and speak with several recruiters to find out what their industry focuses are, and how they can best help you achieve your career objectives.
2) Register with recruiting firms that specialize in your specific industry. While there are firms that provide general placement in a broad spectrum of industries, it is better to work with those recruiting firms that cater to your direct industry. They will know where the jobs are in your field, and how to best market your skill set to potential employers.
3) Provide recruiters with an updated, computer-friendly and well-constructed resume. Make sure that your resume can be emailed, faxed, scanned or entered into a database easily. Leave out extensive graphics such as lines or shading. Likewise, ensure that your resume outlines your key accomplishments, relevant work history, technical and industry skills, and quantitative results, as well as contain industry-related descriptions. Not only will recruiters use this information to match you with potential opportunities, but they will also submit your resume to their client, along with other potential candidates. So, your resume must stand out and be effective.
4) Brush up on your technical skills and industry knowledge. Most recruiting firms will test you on your industry knowledge as well as basic skills understanding, even if you possess industry certifications. So be prepared. Strengthen skills that you may be weak in and read up on industry news. You want ensure that you are current on the terminology, methodologies, and techniques.
5) Discuss your career goals in detail. The best suggestion out of all is to simply be honest with the recruiters you work with about what you want and what you can do. Remember they desire to place you just as much as you want to be placed. The more forthright you are with them about compensation requirements, types of jobs that interest you (types of jobs that do not suit you), what your expectations are, and what you can bring to the table are crucial to what opportunities recruiters will present to you. If you do not want the wrong assignment or job opportunity, then be upfront about what the right position is for you.
